Virus Season is Coming – Get Vaccinated Now to Protect Against Flu and COVID-19

2024-Fall-Vaccines

Published September 9, 2024

Fall is knocking on the door, which means updated vaccines are here to help protect you and others ahead of this year’s respiratory virus season.

Who should receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone ages 6 months and older receive an updated 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccine whether or not they have ever previously received a COVID-19 vaccine.

The CDC also recommends everyone 6 months of age and older, with rare exceptions, receive an updated 2024-25 flu vaccine, and that seniors ages 65 and older receive a high-dose, quadrivalent version.

It is always best to talk to your provider about which vaccines are right for you, should you have questions.

Why should I get flu and COVID-19 vaccinations?

  • Vaccinations help reduce the risk of illness, serious complications, hospitalization and death from respiratory viruses.
  • There is also some evidence, according to the World Health Organization, that getting vaccinated helps reduce the risk of spreading illness to others.
  • Getting vaccinated can also help lessen the strain on healthcare facilities that see an influx of patients during the respiratory virus season.
  • And it could help save you out-of-pocket costs for medical appointments, testing and treatment.

Where and when can I get my vaccines?

The CDC says September and October remain the best times for most people to get vaccinated. Getting vaccinated in subsequent months is still impactful, but you risk exposure to the viruses the later into the season it gets.

We recommend first checking with your employer for an upcoming on-site clinic.* They begin this week and continue into October.

You can also schedule a visit with your primary care provider or go to a local pharmacy such as Rite Aid. Most pharmacies take walk-ins, or you can schedule your visit and the vaccines you wish to receive.

How much do flu and COVID vaccines cost?

Both vaccines are covered at no-cost for SchoolCare/Cigna medical participants. You must present your Cigna ID card at the time of service to obtain your vaccine at no cost.

As a reminder, Cigna is no longer automatically issuing physical ID cards. If you do not have a physical card, you can show your digital card by logging into mycigna.com or the app and clicking the link for ID cards. Subscribers have access to their cards as well as dependent cards in their myCigna portal.

As SchoolCare subscriber or covered spouse, you can earn a $50 incentive for getting your flu vaccine as part of the Good For You! Well-Being program. You MUST present your Cigna ID at the time of service and have completed the online health assessment since June 1st to earn your incentive.

*Employer-sponsored clinics may also offer additional vaccines including: pneumonia (Prevnar 20/Pneumovax 23); tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap); the shingles vaccine (Shingrix).
